A seat
900 ₽
A cushion, a blanket and a spot on the plan. The blanket goes on your knees and not home with you: there are twenty-four of them, same as the seats.
Khersonskaya 14 · through the courtyard, the door with the yellow handle, sixth floor, then on foot
The house next door faces us with a wall that has no windows at all. St Petersburg has more of those walls than it has screens, and one day we put a projector in front of one.
Blankets are ours. The thermos is up to you. The film starts when the sky stops arguing with the projector, and in this city that hour does not come all year round.
booking takes under a minute, you pay on the roof
A projector cannot outshout the sky. Until the sun drops 12 degrees below the horizon, black on brick stays navy blue. Over St Petersburg in summer it never gets that low.
So there is not a single screening from May to July, and that is the sky's schedule rather than ours. The dates below are computed for our own courtyard, not copied from a table.
we start when it gets dark, not before
2006 · Russia · Oksana Bychkova · 84 min
A film about losing a phone in this city and finding a person instead. The courtyard below looks much as it does on screen.
22 seats left
1988 · Japan · Hayao Miyazaki · 86 min
The only film in the programme everyone has already seen. They come anyway, and half the roof knows the lines by heart.
the whole roof is free
2020 · Denmark · Thomas Vinterberg · 117 min
A film that leaves people wanting to talk. This is the screening where most people take the thermos, so we brew extra.
the whole roof is free
2003 · Russia · Aleksey Uchitel · 90 min
Shot on these streets in one breath. After the credits half the roof goes walking through the city.
the whole roof is free
1931 · USA · Charlie Chaplin · 87 min
The one screening without headphones: the film has no sound, and the courtyard makes its own, which turns out to be the right accompaniment.
the whole roof is free
1982 · USSR · Roman Balayan · 92 min
The screening for those past thirty. They arrive quietly, leave quietly, and come back the next year.

The same, plus a litre thermos of cocoa or alcohol-free mulled wine. Biscuits come with it, baked by Tanya's mother, and they run out before the film does.
each seat gets its own ticket: somebody is always driving
Every seat costs the same wherever it is. By the parapet you see the courtyard, in the middle you hear best, by the chimney it is warmest. Those are different comforts and they cost the same: splitting a roof of twenty-four cushions into classes would be silly.
